A person’s character is determined by his motives, and motive is always a matter of the heart. This is what Scripture means when it says that man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. God doesn’t judge us by our looks or our intelligence; he judges us by our hearts.

I wear underwear
A few weeks ago I had a conversation with my mother about underwear. It was not the proverbial discussion of “make sure you have clean ones on in case you’re in an accident.” It was just a conversation about things we needed from the local department store. That’s how it started anyway.

According to the scriptures, sin starts in the mind and works its way outward. Typically, someone who abuses substances does so to medicate their feelings. Avoiding sin isn’t accomplished by simply avoiding the external behavior. Sin at its root is internal.
